Project

Discover the Ancient Cellars

Project

Project: Francesca e Mario Leonori
Promotion: Alessandro Lazzaro

Objectives: The project aims to offer immersive visits and experiences, including tours through the vineyards with explanations of the grape cultivation phases, visits to the underground structures of the cellar, and guided tastings of local wines. The above-ground building will serve as a welcoming area to introduce the visitors to the tour and guide them through the ancient traditions of winemaking in the Castelli Romani.

Operational Phases:

  • Detailed mapping of the underground area.
  • Complete reclamation of the hypogeal structure with debris removal.
  • Consolidation and securing of cellar walls and ceilings.
  • Installation of lighting and signaling systems for public use.
  • Completion of work in the above-ground building, which will serve as an introduction to the underground tour and illustrate grape cultivation methods.

Planned Works: The restoration project commits to preserving the cave spaces entirely, intervening with respect and non-invasiveness to maintain the original nature of these places. The intervention aims to secure and enhance the area, avoiding any alteration of existing surfaces. For the above-ground area, restoration of damaged elements is planned, and a new covering similar to the original one will be implemented. To facilitate visitor reception, a new restroom will be constructed, and modular furnishings will be used to promote the multifunctionality of the space. A new flooring, also suitable for differently-abled users, will be installed to enable access to the caves. All materials used will be natural, in harmony with the surrounding environment.

Funded through Public Notice for the submission of proposals for the restoration and enhancement of rural architectural and landscape heritage - to be financed under the PNRR [M1.C3 - Measure 2 "Regeneration of small cultural, cultural, religious, and rural sites" - Investment 2.2], approved by D.D. No. G04542 of April 13, 2022, financed by the European Union - NextGenerationEU and managed by the Ministry of Culture; Implementing Body Lazio Region.
